Legislation / Program Orientation CO/FPO 101

This course offers learners an overview of the legislative framework that impacts fire and life safety activities through which company officers perform their roles. This course provides an orientation to the Company Officer and Fire Prevention Officer Programs and highlights the changes to the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

Incident management System (IMS) for Fire Department Officers

This course is designed to provide fire department officers with an overview of Incident Management. There will be classroom work as well as some practical sessions on the fire grounds. The course provides officers with an opportunity to hone their skills in commanding small to medium sized incidents. The course is an ideal way to prepare for studying more comprehensive IMS courses taught at the Ontario Fire College in the 500 series.

Live Fire Training

This course is conducted in a safe and controlled environment where students will spend the day practicing safe fire attacks on a variety of different fire simulations ranging from vehicle fires, simulated flammable liquid pan fires, simulated propane tanks on fire, slit flange fires from simulated pressurized and non-pressurized sources and interior building fires. Students will:

  • Learn the use of different fire streams
  • Learn safe practices when preparing and implementing for coordinated fire attacks
  • Learn about techniques in extinguishing various types of fires

Students should come prepared for a busy day with moderate to hard physical exertion. Students are responsible to bring their own PPE including SCBA, spare cylinder and P.A.S.S. alarm. All students have to have current SCBA mask fit testing.

Flashover – Recognizing Pre-Flashover Conditions for Survival

This course, which is conducted in a safe and controlled environment, introduces firefighters to the conditions that can lead to flashover. Course participants gain an enhanced knowledge of fire behavior with an emphasis on factors leading to the potential of flashover. Student-learners will enter a Training Unit wearing full bunker gear during this course.

Firefighter Survival and Rescue

This course covers the basic equipment, procedures and techniques for fire fighters to survive in crisis events when they become separated from their team or when fire and building conditions are such that they cause a fire fighter to become trapped. Topics include emergency air management, RIT deployment, the Denver Drill and the Nance Drill.

Fire Scene Assessment

This course reflects selected Ontario Fire Services Standards, the current OFM investigation program standards and some of the guidelines of NFPA 921 and 1033. The course includes:

  • roles and responsibilities of OFM personnel, and OFM expertise available
  • roles and responsibilities of the various agencies
  • fire scene safety and security
  • basic chemistry of fire
  • origin and cause
  • evidence collection and preservation
  • documentation, interviewing and report writing

Fire Extinguisher Training

The student will become familiar with the different classes of fire, the types of fire extinguishers and extinguishing agents. The student will learn which fire extinguishers and extinguishing agents are effective on the various classes of fire. The student will learn to operate a fire extinguisher in a simulated environment.

NFPA 1006 Rope Rescue

Overview: The NFPA Rope Rescue Program is designed to provide successful participants with a full, all-inclusive package for rope rescue. This training is set up for the professional fire fighter, who will be introduced to new, modern climbing and high-angle rescue techniques to a level of trainer in rope rescue. Using certified components and modern techniques, this course is highly effective. Thought up by professional fire fighters and set up by a certified teacher, this is set up to reach a completely new level, as yet unseen in the fire rescue industry. NFPA Level 1 is the first step in a two-level structure. This level has the successful participant; identifying hazards, using equipment and applying limited techniques specified in NFPA 1006 to perform technical rope rescue operations.  NFPA Level 2 is the highest step in the NFPA 1006 certification process. Level 2 builds on the participants experience and training from Level 1 and teaches how to apply advanced techniques specified in NFPA 1006

Aim: The aim is to train personnel to a level at which they can maintain and enhance current levels of professionalism, competence and safety existent within the fire service. Who will benefit: Industrial fire and rescue teams, fire departments, SAR teams and those striving for a position in these careers that want up-to-date training and to be trained by professionals in a no-nonsense environment, to prepare them for a rope-rescue operation.

Structure: This course is highly practical in nature, but class-work is an essential part of the course. Candidates will be subject to further questions on paper and a continual competence assessment of their practical skills. Upon successful completion, the candidate will be issued with a certificate of competence valid for three years.

NFPA 1006 Confined Space Rescue

Overview: The NFPA Confined Space Rescue Program is designed to provide successful participants with a thorough knowledge of safely rescuing a person from a confined space utilizing advanced rescue techniques as specified in NFPA 1006.  NFPA Level 1 is the first step in a two-level structure. This level has the successful participant; identifying hazards, using equipment and applying limited techniques specified in NFPA 1006 to perform confined space rescue operations.  NFPA Level 2 is the highest step in the NFPA 1006 certification process. Level 2 builds on the participants experience and training from Level 1 and teaches how to apply advanced techniques specified in NFPA 1006.

Candidate Review Skills

The Eastern Ontario Fire Academy will be offering Practical Skills Training to review and prepare personnel for the Candidate Testing Process. This training is for Trained Firefighters and Graduates of the Pre-Service College Program. This training will focus on the practical skills required to successfully complete the new candidate testing process. The testing is limited to 15 participants per day. PPE and SCBA will be provided.
